MST: Club3d 1-4 MST HUB

Post by AdevProjects »

I have recently bought a Club3d 1-4 Displayport MST Hub. Works well as described in the specs. I have had no issues with it. Just letting you know in case you were thinking of using one. Would recommend it if you need an mst hub.

Any GPU that has DisplayPort 1.2 (17.28 Gbit/s) should support a processor with four 1920x1080@60Hz outputs which is 3840x2160@60Hz (12.54 Gbit/s) divided in 4 quarters. And in theory, DisplayPort 1.1 would be able to support four 1920x1080@30Hz but I don't think it's an option with that unit.

curious if this works with nvidia m graphics cards such as 970m 980m.

could a laptop with one dp1.2 one hdmi and one vga be used with this to run 6 displays plus the laptop display?

could a laptop with two dp1.2s use two of these and the built in display?

very curious anyone tested please report thanks.

Yes but you'll still be limited to the 4 max displays including your laptop UI

No. Nvidia GPUs will be capped at 4 and AMD GPUs at 6 but not all cards will support maximum outputs.

Even though MST Hubs are very attractive on paper, I don't believe they are yet very reliable and I would never use them for a show.

MST allows to carry multiple streams on one cable but the GPU still treats it as as multiple displays so whatever maximum count your GPU has still applies.

In comparison, a video processor such as a Datapath X4 or a Matrox 2x/3x splits one large outputs into smaller sections so as long as your GPU supports the larger resolution, it's counted as one output.

For instance, I run up to 8 displays off my laptop (MacBook Pro) regularly using 2 Datapath X4 off the two MiniDP ports and I do multi-projector blends. I could technically run 12 displays by adding one more Datapath X4 off the HDMI port.

I have some experience with the MST-hub.
In my opinion, they're not working very stable. I used it in a permanent installation. From time to time (months) I got an call about something strange happening. It always was the MST-hub.

Maybe for very budget installations, it can be a solution. Otherwise, as said, the Datapath X4 is the best.
