Resolume based media server for 8 hd projectors?

Post by enjoykaos »

We are setting up a club to have a 360 degree projection inside. Would like to run it using a Resolume based media server. What spec is required for Resolume on a windows based machine to run 8 hd projectors? And obvs some kind of monitoring solution.. Ideally we need to be able to run the setup as individual screens and have other inputs [for camera feed in - blackmagic intensity pro im guessing] and for other computers [ie visiting vj's etc]

Nvidia titan with datapath? Two titans? What ssd array is best? Windows or mac [i prefer windows but..]

Is it actually practical to approach this using Resolume?

All suggestions welcome but specific tested setups most appreciated...

Cheers, JIminy..

I have Titan X. it is a great card but I suggest you an another with two DL DVI outputs. the reason: Displayport - DL DVI adapters are sucks. you will need 3840x2160px resolution but most of the adapters in the market can not give you this.

I suggest a 780Ti or 980Ti with two Datapath X4. Blackmagic cards are great, an intersity pro give you the ability to host a VJ with HDMI/DVI output.

Raid0 SSD, a decent i7 processor and 64 GB RAM will handle this easily.

just for the knowledge share here is Oaktown's message on this subj.. ez now..

"You're on the right track.

My recommendation would be one high end GPU with two dedicated 4K displayport outputs such at Nvidia 980 series and two datapath X4 broken down into 4 HD outputs each. With this size comp (15360x1080), keep in mind that it will need to be 30FPS and you will be limited to very few layers. You might also want/need to disable "global effects and blend modes in preferences". Another legit approach would be to scale you comp down to (10240x720) and let the X4 do the scaling up for you. The main thing will be to manage the blend between projector 1 and 8 to get a full 360˚.

I would get the best motherboard and processor you can buy and use PCIe (M.2 if available) SSD system hard drive and create a RAID 10 array for your data. RAID 10 withh 6 @ 250GB SSD would be ideal by giving you fast 750GB with redundancy.

As far as your capture card, I would recommend a DeckLink Studio if you can find one or a DeckLink Studio 4K. That card will give you the most flexibility for bringing any kind of signal into your comp.

Not long ago I designed a 15 XGA projector system but for a club in the Carribeans using one Datapath dL8 and four DatapahX4 and it worked great so it can be done but it takes good design and careful implementation."

Soooo that was fun :) We opened on Thursday and installation went right down to the line.. Successfully installed datapath one by the Thu opening, we had 4 screens working form the main computer and my laptop running the other two.. Currently they are 6 projectors arranged as three screens.. they look pretty sweet and the response has been fantastic - people come out if the club and the first thing they talk about is the projections

Specced the computer more or less exactly as Oaktown described.. its a beast :) and has coped with the job excellently so far. [It arrived on Thursday morning btw haaahaaaahaaa]

So yeh did thursday then friday night [spanish hardcore drum n bass crew] and then programmed it to run on saturday in my absence cos had gig in brighton [breakcore[!]].. "aaargh" but yeh all went well and i still feel like living now, more or less ;)

Have uum at least one technical question.. re coming out of a displayport with high resolution.. had issues setting up the second datapath on friday - couldnt get the datapath to register the computer output as more than 1280 x 1024. Currently guessing that that is because of the adapter i was using.. what is the solution - even some "active" adapters only claim up to 1920x1200, i need at least 3860 x 1080, ideally more for when we install the other two projectors... [Could come out of the hdmi instead but figure it really should be able to work out of the displayport..] [oh and its a 980ti with datapath one coming out of the dvi port]

Thanks in advance and thanks for all previous knowledges, definitely wouldn't have got this sorted without yr help nice one 8-)

Ill post some pictures when have a chance ;)

looking forward to see what we can do with this.. thanks for the help biggups team Resolume ;)
