2x graphic cards + 2x TH2GO

The ultimate goal is to reach 12 outputs, I am thinking of using two graphic cards, and two Matrox TrippleHead2Go-s. Can it be done, do you think it will work, have you had experience with it?

Do you think its better to use two graphic cards of the same model, like two GTX970s?
Plug both TH2GOs into the main card, or one for each card?

Would it be better to invest in a better card for the load, like a Titan X, or the new 1080 even, plug in two TH2GOs, and add another cheaper card just for the last four outputs?
Which card would you suggest for the second one?

I've always had my high resolution outputs on the main card. Ive had success with a 1080ti and a 1060 for dummy outputs.

Always keep your monitor plugged into the main card.
