New gig computer build - Thoughts?

Post by xdjxklusivex »

Got tired of lugging around my home desktop so I decided to build one specifically for gig use. Goal was portability and packing a good punch.

Case dimensions: 15.6" x 10.2" x 12.6"
I should be able to find a pelican case that will fit the case, accessories/cables and my 28 inch monitor!

CPU: Intel - Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair - H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-Z270MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
Storage: Samsung - 950 PRO 256GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB SC2 HYBRID GAMING Video Card -- I still need to purchase this, waiting for a decent deal. Running my 1070 G1 in there for now.
Case: Corsair - Air 240 MicroATX Mid Tower Case
Case Fan: Corsair - Air Series SP120 62.7 CFM 120mm Fan
Case Fan: Corsair - Air Series SP120 62.7 CFM 120mm Fan
Case Fan: Kingwin - CF-08LB 30.0 CFM 80mm Fan
Case Fan: Kingwin - CF-08LB 30.0 CFM 80mm Fan
Power Supply: Thermaltake - Toughpower GOLD 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link - TL-WN881ND PCI-Express x1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter
Other: Blackmagic Design DeckLink Duo 2

What is the purpose of the BMD card? SDI In, SDI Out, Both?

What is your build cost?

How many layers at what resolution will you need? a 1080ti is a beast, but for mobility, a 1060/1070 might work just as well?

For $1,400-$2,500 you can get an even better machine IN a laptop

If you are traveling a lot, a laptop might be better for you, but I really don't know what your end game is?

Personally, I'm using a laptop with an i7, 16gb of ram, a gtx1060/1070, 1 tb of m.2 storage, and 2-3 4k outputs.
I can run about 22-24 layers of 1080p with fx before hitting 30fps, and about 10-12 layers of 4k
I have a SDI out usb card and additional 1tb external ssd.
All of which fits into a nice pelican case I can fly with.
If I need SDI outs, the BMD Micro converters or a Decimator Micro converter is only $80 (in which I keep a few on hand)

BMD gets used for IMAG in most of the time. I have not had to use it for output yet as I have enough on the GPU for my current needs.

Ive only spent about 475ish out of pocket for this build. Mainly because I pulled 16gigs of ram, 256 m.2, wireless card, BMD and 1070 out of my home machine. My other machine is running a i7 6700k which is actually pretty close to the 7600k so I shouldn't notice too much performance drop which is nice

For that price, this is a great value. Good work!

Why don't you just go straight to the i5 8400 since you're already spending money on a Z270 mobo? The performance of the 8400 is similar to the i7 7700k, due to it's higher core counter, as it has 6 cores opposed to the 4 cores of your current i5, the 8th gen of intel cpu is a beast cause they are trying to compete with the ryzen variants, also, the 7th gen i5 will probably bottleneck the 1080ti and the 8th gen won't. As for the rest, it is a nice build.

A laptop 1080 is coming close to a desktop 1080ti. You really notice when going into 3 datapaths.

Would actually need a z370 board to run the 8th gen processors unfortunately. I SHOULD have done that but got the parts at a pretty killer price so couldn't pass it up. Few months down the road I will most likely upgrade if it starts to piss me off at gigs lol
