Turn off layers / play each clip individually?

Hi,
So what I want to do is very simple.
I want to just click on each clip and it to play out regardless of layer, so if i start a clip below a clip in a higher layer, it plays that clip and stops the one above (no blending of the 2 in the column).
In earlier versions this could be done by just clicking "Disable Global Effects and Blend Modes" in the preferences but now that option has gone in the newer version.
Any ideas, thanks in advance.

Select all your clips and set them to “target active layer” then they’ll all play in whichever layer you select. If you never change layer they’ll just transition (or cut) from one to another.
