Ultimate post for hardware

Post by djdiego71 »

hi, veejays!!!
The next weeks, in the club where I'm working, they goes to upgrade the video system with new screens and projectors and move the conection from composite video to vga wire. Now this demand from me to move my poor 320x240 signal and prossesing to 800x600 for the output.
How is the best upgrade for my computer (Win2K, Athon XP 2400+, 1GB Ram, Gforce 440mx, 80 Gb HD).
I'm not use video loops, just some small clips. But I use a lot of effect at same time with two live signals (one from DC10+ & other from Osprey 100 at 320x240), overlays and flash texts and animations. Every channel with effect and another 3 effects over all composite.
On my actual system, all works fine at 320x240 but never I can put my output & process at 640x480 with thats stuffs.
Suggestion for upgrade?
Of course, mobo & processor are in the top of the list for change, but: Intel o AMD? 64 bits? Dualcore? 2Gb or 3 GB ram is better than 1GB. And the graphic card? AGP or PCIx? ATI or Nvidia?
How impact the performance of RESOLUME on every component?. Hard Disk is not important for me now.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions....

as far as i know resolume doesnt support multi threading, or 64bit, so it realy depends on the brute force of your CPU, and i think intel have the highest clockspeed CPUs at the moment. i have about the same system as you, though less ram and a bit better card, and i normaly process at 640x480. though i dont generaly use 3 layers with alot of effects.

Thanks, Levon, I hope more user post their opinion on this thread. There are much info about this on many post like this, may be it's so important to reunify the specs for users that find answers at questions as my own.

Anybody use 3 layer effects plus a effect on every channel???

Intel or AMD doesn't really matter a lot, just avoid HT. You can never have too much RAM. Get a decent ATi card (X700+). Fast hard discs. Sorted.

i was speaking to wraith from VJforums and he said his current resolume setup is. also you might want to check out this where wraith talks about resolume a bit.
-P4 3.4 HT (with speed stepping and a 2MB cache, single core)
I chose this because clock seed is the main thing that makes Resolume go,go,go.
-4GB of Ram (Because the chip can't use any more)
Nivida 7800 Video Card, Although Resolume does not use much in the way of hardware accleration this card whips ass and can be used on GL applications.
-One 250GB drive for OS and programs and two WD Raptors in a RAID 0 for the clips. Its actually nearly instant loading times for an offline deck with 20 30 sec clips in DIV-2 AVI format. What can I say it kicks ass. You need to get a 3ware card to coordinate the RAID and the other drives. You can get motherboards that have RAID support but those are hardly as good.
-And of course two montiors.

And yeah I run Resolume flat out with no issues. You can get by with less but I figured go big or go home.

Ok, then, P4 is better than AMD64? The HT in P4 is important or not?
If the CPU is overclocked, this stress so much the chip? An AMD overclocked normaly is so fast than a P4 overclocked?

Now, getting some info from severals forums, I get that an Athlon64 with Overclocking is more productive than a P4 with Overclocking.
If anybody can confirm some test with Resolume?

I need to buy a system that I can use 800x600 for output (process resolution may be 640x480) with two live cams into two layers, 3º layer with flash, and all channels with some effects, and three master effect too.

Thanks for the info from all members of this forum.

Hi,

i'm using resolume since a few days on the following system:
- P4, 3GHz
- 2 Gig Memory
- Matrox Parhelia with dual Head setup
- HW Raid with all my clips on it
- 1 Cam with firewire in
- 1 Cam connected via Matrox X-treme100

I'm processing at 400x300 and displaying at 800x600 (nearest PAL Reslolution) and since now verry happy with this VJ-Tool...

So I had no troubles till now using many many effects on all layers and effect slots and also use minimum 1 livecam image all the time.
Also i'm using audioanalysis to trigger some of the effects (and using Mouse triggering of effekt parameters - this is a absolutely genial feature!!!) and everything without any troubles or frameskipping ore something else!!!!

So i think that I will change from Motion Dive to Resolume, since this pice of software will give me a lot of more features than motion dive.

BTW some small effects i will further on use from my Edirol V4 (like "key-in" some sponsor logos...)

So many words and less sense *g*

...my config is working very well!!

Ok, thanks, iTiVi, your post has very helpfull for me.
Some one have more test?
I use the bottom layer for a live input form another PC with AVS Winamp runing, and the middle layer for live cam.
But I know that some vjs stream the winamp avs animation via network. How can I do this?
