Using and understanding FPS

Post by michaeldiruocco »

Hey Everyone,

new to Resolute / Arena and I had a question around FPS. I know under the output that i can click on Show FPS. This shows me the FPS in the preview monitor. My question is, is that number the FPS of my content when i preview it or is it really the FPS of what I'm outputting? Also is it limited by what i set my framerate in my composition settings?
I just want to try and understand this number better? I also assume by the FPS is limited by what FPS your content is running at?

Thanks ahead of time and apologies if these are basic questions.

Hey howdie Michael...
The FPS displayed in Resolume refers to the current performance of the software in rendering and outputting video content.

Here are the key points to understand in relation to your question:

FPS in Preview vs. Output:
The FPS shown in the preview monitor typically reflects the performance of the software in real-time. This includes both the preview and the output, assuming both are running under the same conditions.

Influence of Composition Settings:
The maximum FPS is indeed influenced by the famerate set in your composition settings. If you set your composition to 30 FPS, for instance, Resolume will aim to render and output at this rate. However, achieving this rate consistently depends on various factors like the complexity of your content, the capabilities of your computer, and external factors such as the capability of the connected output devices.

Content FPS Limitation:
The FPS of your content can also be a limiting factor. For example, if your content is at 24 FPS, and your composition is set to 60 FPS, the software can only display the content at 24 FPS, potentially repeating frames to fill in the gaps. However, effects and transitions applied within Resolume may still render at the higher frame rate of the composition.

The FPS number is a good indicator of how smoothly Resolume is running. If it's consistently lower than your composition settings OR your Hz of your connected monitor or projektor, it might indicate that your system is struggling to keep up with the demands of your content. In such cases, optimizing your content or upgrading your hardware may be necessary.

In summary, the FPS number in Resolume Arena gives you an idea of the software's current rendering performance, which is influenced by your composition settings, the nature of your content, and the capability of your hardware. It's a valuable metric for ensuring that your visuals are being output smoothly and without unnecessary lag or stutter.

Best wishes
