Universe Chenges to '1' upon selecting node

Post by Rishi »

So as in the the Topic. When selecting a discovered node for a Lumiverse, the output universe changes to '1'
I did some testing and as far as i have found, this only happens when a discovered node is selected, not when an IP address is manually entered. (or when switching to 'No Output' or 'Broadcast')
In some ways it doesn't matter all that much, one can always change it back to whatever it was, but i can't think of a reason why it should do that. The first available universe is '0' , but even changing the universe setting at all from what it is when selecting a different node, doesn't quite make sense to me.
It tends to cause some confusion in the front of house.

What's the universe the node is set to it it's settings?

That seems to be completely irrelevant, normally speaking i set it to '0', but when i found out about the changing of the Universe, i started defaulting it to '1' to prevent issues.
Just did a small test to confirm that behavior, and regardless of what is being sent in the ArtPoll Reply, the universe just switches to '1' when a discovered node is selected.

n.b. What happens with the Entec node seems to be even more confusing, since it just starts counting universes at '1' which actually responds to universe '0' being sent.

Fortunately most VJ's have the subnet of their ethernet adapter set to 255.0.0.1, so they end up just selecting an IP address rather than a discovered node, but before i start to convince them otherwise, it would be good if this could be at least explained.

Well, when you select a discovered node, the Universe number is taken from what that node sent to Resolume.
That's why I'm asking if the universe 1 is what's set up in your node.

First of all, this is happening without any regards to the Node i am using. But what field off the ArtPoll Reply would that be ? Because i know only of the subnet field.
Also Resolume appears to only supports 255 universes (divided over 16 subnets) but the most recent version of Artnet supports 256x times that right ?
If you could enlighten me. I am curious where i am sending a '1' rather than the selected Universe ?

Hmm in fact by coincidence i discovered that if an output was previously assigned to a (discovered) node and now a new node is available that uses the same IP address but has a different 'short name' the universe then defaults to 2 upon selecting that node. At least that is what i think happened. Just to be clear, it was by accident, the updating of the firmware of the node temporarily changed the 'short name' and all of a sudden i had to re-select the node. Somehow it seems to me that it would make the most sense if Resolume would just not modify the output universe setting at all when selecting a node, since there is no criteria upon which can be conclusively determined what the new setting should be.
