Best machine at the moment
Ok I'm about to build a full new desktop for my resolume machine, it is doing to be fully dedicated to resoulme and nothing else. The more I read the less I seem to understand. the bigest thing is hard drives what is the best option? stripe array or just a couple of 10,000rpm drives?
Best you can get is 15,000RPM SCSI but these are VERY VERY EXPENSIVE and small in comparision. If you can afford SCSI the better company is Adaptec, I've used them before and are VERY good. Your best economical way is 2x10,000RPM raptors or more in RAID (2x150GB). Although if you check HDTACH you will notice all the hype about raptors (i have one currently) isn't all its cracked up to be against the new SATA-2 in a RAID. 2x decent 7200RPM drives (2x500GB=1TB) is not only cheap (£160-£180) but isnt really that much different than the raptor's performance. I say 500GB as the platters have less info on them than 750GB+ and seek times are faster without losing to much space. Plus there better GB/£
As for processor the Core 2 Duo E6600 is an excellent chip for its money. The E6700 (extreme) is very expensive in comparision. ANd the QX6700 is 2 E6600 (or E6500's) on 1 die meaning a kind of 4-core processor but not actually a propper 4 core. Still, excellent if your going be running many applications at the same time. Ram, well i always stuck with Crucial as they've always had excellent service for me and thats a rareity these days. Motherboards also i've stuck with DFI for the same reason. I had so much trouble with a ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe and there customer service doesnt exist. I ended u repairing it myself and selling it on ebay and getting a DFI. I gave up with ASUS thee. But i believe DFI are a little behind. If your planning on using 3D applications such as Adobe's Production suite + AfterEffects (As i do) you'll be looking for a Nvidia Quadro series of graphics card and not the mainstream Geforce if you can afford them. There excellent at openGL and 3D animation such as CAD etc etc. If you will be gaming on it, While the Quadro is more than capable, SOme games will run terrible on Quadro for some reason and Geforce is your best bet. A 7900 is eqivilant to a quadro 2500, 7950 - 3500 and after that they use the same Geforce 8800 GPU on Quadro 4500+ i believe.
Least thats what i picked up on haha. Sorry for essay and probably confused you more
It all depends on your budget.
