laptop confusions...

Post by r8d »

hi,
i'm a graphic designer and amateur vj, from bombay,india...
and i have a macbook(not pro) with 2Ghz on it....
at the moment we use a macbook pro 15"(2.16Ghz) and the mac book for gigs or we use another desktop(amd athalon/4GB/nvidia geforce 6600)with the MBP...
i'm looking for more mobility coz i need to be able to carry my machines to gigs( which luckily i seem to be getting quite a few out of bombay coming up) so need a primary machine to pair up with the MBP..
i know for sure it's gonna be a pc...just not sure which one...
the BIG BIG problem i'm having is that a lot of the models i want aren't available in india, which means product support is also unavailable here...can still pick it up from anywhere else but nervous coz with no support it might get a little difficult....

had short listed the following:(not in any order of preference)
dell XPS 1710
asus G1 or G2(available in india)
alienware 5550 or 97000
HP 9000 series(available in india)

so basically my question, is which one?? or have i missed out any...
advice and direction would be very much appreciated..

I've brought a Dell Precision M90 with C2D T7600(2.33), 2GB DDR2-633, Quadro FX3500M which you cant get in the UK still. I got it from ultrahighendcomputers off ebay, only payed £90 P&P but it did take a while, but better than paying £700!!! and saved £1000 from uk price with the FX2500M

I use it for Adobe Production Suite and Resolume and numerous other things, I've had no problems what so ever. Highly reccomended, specially if your doing production work. Alienware is owned by Dell so there basically the same but game oriantated, whereas Dell's are work horses. XPS is also Dell's gaming range. Stupid i know but they continue to keep there XPS range going even though they taken Alienware... Silly if you ask me but who am i to say.....

first of thanks messhead for the tip on the dell...
i have narrowed down my choice to either the HP dv9000series or asus G2/G1. The HP is pretty easily available, but i'm not sure how much i can customize it...does anyone know what kind a mods i can do to it, in terms of HDD,graphic card....
found out i can order the G2/G1 here, but it'll take a month to get it(which i'm fine with)...
but here's my main question......which one??
really wanna get the asus, but most reviews say it's average in graphics abilities...but the reviews are being done by gamers....i intend using it for photoshop/illustrator/after effects......
The HP dosen't seem like a really hard core desktop replacement...which is the reason i'm buying this laptop....
can anyone help?
thanks in advance

Erm, your right, THe asus's are gamers laptops also though. It's hard to find a proper desktop replacement. I hated the thought of buying a dell as 2 of my friends have been done over by them in the past, Using cheap parts and REALLY BAD customer service. I was very hesitant at getting tis M90 as i was also importing it. But as i say, ive never looked back.

You sound like your after what i was and i hunted for 2 months but always came back to the Dell M90 cause its the only one that has the Quadro FX3500M Graphics, which as you know is a professional graphics card. Most only have the FX1500M and very few have the FX2500M. The only other company that rivaled it was ROCK, but are VERY EXPENSIVE!!! £2,500-£3,000 for what i was looking at, But so was the M90 in my country. I just opted for the import and saved £1,000

The price was a big deciding factor for me. Games push the limit of laptops and i do play SUpreme Commander at 1920x1200 (native resolution) on full detail and have no problems. It doesnt get that hot i have take it off my knee and it's quiet. I couldnt ask for anything more.

But the new Santa Rosa Chipset is out now so may be worth looking into exactly what you can get with that chipset now which i havn't, It runs 800FSB not 633 and is updated in other bits too

ok so now have heard some really bad things about asus's service in india...so i think for sure the asus is gonna be my last choice.....which is now down to;
DELL M4300
(seems a decent enough config, waiting for a mail back from them to see what's customizable)

HP dv 9502AU
(not to happy with the config available at the online hp india store, so trying to figure out how much i can customize it from a store in bombay)

HP dv8000series
(online store says its discontinued, but i think it's still available thru HP agents here, gonna check up on it)

these aren't my favorite companies to buy a laptop from, but keeping in mind product support, these guys offer the best in india.

my budget is around $2500, can go higher, but would rather not...also need to buy a nice av mixer(if anyone has any suggestions)
The Dell M4300 is working out to $3200 here.(C2D 2.2Ghz/120 GB 7200 RAM/2 GB/ quadro FX 512(only 256 is dedicated)
would rather not spend that much. so still looking,
the dell inspiron 1720 is running me $2000 cofigured the way i like it.
still looking for the hp 80000.
still considering the asus G1S $2200( 2 years onsite warranty- 24 hrs comes along with the cost of the machine)
so gonna have to decide in the next week, so that i can order it. we're doing a gig in delhi 1st week off Oct. want to use it there, coz that's the beginning of a couple of gigs that we'll be travelling out of bombay for...
so still looking ...

Im going stick with what i've used cause its faultless, I seen same one as mine on EBAY with 4GB Ram(mines 2GB) , 160GB 7,200RPM HDD(mines 100GB) for £1,400 ($2,700). Thats an absolutly obserd price for that power. I payed £1,550 not 2 month ago!!!

I simply wouldnt reccomend anything else cause it's a belter and am amazed by how good it actually is. ANd stable!!! :)
