Mac Pro Frame Rate low fps low?

I am not experiencing the blazingly fast speeds I expected with Avenue and my system configuration.
Running one 640x480 clip shows 39.6fps and three layers with difference mix mode and one automated BPM effect (metaimage) shows 30.51fps. I expected more like 60fps. Does this kind of performance sound normal?
Mac Pro 8-Core 2.8 GHz, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB GDDR4, Leopard 10.5.5
Lenovo Thinkpad W500, T9400 2.53Ghz, 4GB RAM, ATI V500 FireGL 512MB, Windows 7 Pro
