improving performance

ok,
you guys are genna larf,....
im using a sony sub-notebook which is P3 550 with 128mb ram. As long as i keep it simple with flash and some avi's resolume runs fairly ok. Any more than that and the output gets real jerky. Until i get a new computer im genna have to put up with this meagre setup. My question is how to maximise on performance with this limited setup...
more memory?
defrag hdd?
more compressed clips ( whats the fastest generally mpegs? avis? movs? )
i wonder if i can upgrade the cpu?
simple questions but any advice welcome,

fast hd in an external firewire box? Would still be useful when you get a quicker computer.

so its the speed of the disk the fooftage is stored that radically improves performance - and resolume supports external firewire drives? didnt know that. Is a 7200rpm drive genna be fast enough?

yeah an external hd will help ... running your desktop on 16 bit improves the speed ... and using the cinepak codec will give the most speed improvement ... stay far away from indeo if you need to play more layers of video on a sub 1Ghz computer

just one other thing...
im assuming an external firwire hdd will only improve .mov, .mpeg, .avi etc performance and not flash file performace, yeah? .swf i think will be stored in memory and guess if im having problems with mixing just flash files this is a cpu issue? or a memory issue?
