DXV samples don't play smoothly.

Post by schismatrix »

Hello.

I've noticed, that after conversion samples in DXV-codec they don't play smoothly. There is appear stuttering.
It is something like light stroboscopic effect (about 5 delays per second).
It is especially noticeable in video with slowly moving objects.
Is it normal for this codec or I have a problem with my system?

This is link for archive with several files:
http://rapidshare.com/files/337190900/D ... y.zip.html

Galaxy 1 - source file H.264 with smooth playing.

Galaxy 2 - result of conversion in DXV.
Stuttering has appeared. It is especially noticeable in last 5 seconds.

Galaxy 3 - DXV file (Galaxy 2) converted back to H.264.
Maybe stuttering in DXV playing appears only on my Mac, so from Galaxy 3 you will see how Galaxy 2 plays on my system.

Please, test it.

DXV playing stuttering is the same in QuickTime Player and Resolume.
I used Compressor and Batch Export Utility on Mac OS, After Effects on Windows XP.
And it is the same problem with Photo JPEG.

I have supposition that QT decodes files not correctly.
But why both on Mac OS and Windows?
Or maybe problem with my hardware?
I works on MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo 2.5, 2 Gb DDR2 SDRAM 667 МГц
GeForce 8600M GT 512 Mb).

I send my DXV file (Galaxy 2) to my friend. He wrote that playing is smooth. He convert it in H.264 and send to me. And it is really absolutly smooth.

So there is a problem, because if I convert DXV file to H.264 I receive video with stuttering (Galaxy 3).
I replaced QT components in library and system folders from my first Snow Leopard Time Machine copy.
But nothing changed.

And I tried to play Photo JPEG file in VLC Player and I got stuttering too.
Wat is common between DXV and Photo JPEG?

On one forum I read about same problem with Photo JPEG. Author wrote that in Windows Media Player on XP video is smooth. Buy the way which codec pack needs for WMP 11 to play Photo JPEG files? I want to check it.

UPD
I tried to play Photo JPEG files in WMP 11 with ffdshow-rev32 codec pack on Windows XP. I got stuttering too.

Hmmmm

There are some strange things going on here.

I'm quite surprised that your friend is able to play back Galaxy 2.mov smoothly, because the stuttering in that file is caused by two frames after each other actually being the same frame. When scrubbing through the movie frame by frame you can notice this.

When I compress the original Galaxy 1.mov directly to DXV using Quicktime Pro, Compressor or MPEG Streamclip, I get a result with smooth motion.

My guess is that some of these problems are caused by the 'original' file (Galaxy 1.mov) being 29.97 fps, and it looks like this was achieved by doing some sort of pulldown from an earlier 25fps source. And that maybe you are taking some steps in between (putting the file in AE or another NLE?), which may interfere with the conversion process?
But aside from that, I'm at a loss to understand what's going on.

I'm sorry for confusion.
I've solved my problem. I must don't change parameters in Compressor (Filters, Frame Control, fps) when I convert video to DXV/PhotoJPEG and file will be OK.
DXV plays OK in Resolume but still stuttering in QT Player. Is it normal?
Photo JPEG plays fine in both programs.

I think that I confused some files, when I send my archive.

By the way I noticed that Resolume actually plays files DXV and PhotoJPEG not ideal smooth (especially video with slow moving objects). (Not so terribly how in my Galaxy 2 file but noticeable.)
For Example if you convert my Galaxy 1 to Photo JPEG and compare it playing in QT Player and Resolume, you will see that in QT playing is ideal smooth, but in Resolume there is little stuttering sometimes.
Or it plays perfect in Resolume on your machine?

People in this topic wrote same thing:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4271&start=10

«same problem here. tryed to playback a 768x576 PAL movie with smooth
video content.
there is no way to play this single video without stuttering !
i have tested several codecs, several machines, several harddisks, macos & windows.»

Thank you.

"Flickering" problem with DXV codec....

Post by nellacameraverde »

Hi all, I've experienced a similar problem...
I'm rendering footage using Premiere Pro CS4 with DXV codec. In zip file I've included:
- Giostrina_orig.avi that's the original file, MJPEG encoded (from my camera), 30 fps
- Giostrina_DXV.mov, original file rendered with DXV (see complete list of rendering options used in premiere_renderin_settings.PNG).

http://www.refoto.it/fEDE/resolume/resolumeproblems.zip

Newly rendered file contains some strange effect like a "flickering"... it seems to "step back" sometimes like an old disc. See at the end of video, it's very clear.

I've also tryed another way, slowing down the original file to 25 fps, then rendering again with exactly the same options.
Result is file
Giostrina_cast25_DXV.mov
the bad effect is much stronger.

http://www.refoto.it/fEDE/resolume/Gios ... 25_DXV.zip

Could it be due to a problem in converting 25 fps to 30 fps?
But in the first example, it was rendering 30 to 30.....
Maybe a compatibility problem with Premiere??

The problem shows the same in both avenue and quicktime player...

Thanks a lot if you can provide an answer.....

Thanks a lot for the files and the export settings. I'm downloading now, and we'll report back after some testing.

Well... As far as I can tell, this problem is caused by Premiere. I've tried re-encoding with 3 different applications (I don't work with Premiere myself unfortunately), and I'm not seeing any stutter or repeated frames. The output is even slightly lighter than your DXV version, which actually brings it closer to the original.

Have you tried using another application for re-encoding?

Nice clip btw ;)

Thanks goto10... Which other programs did u try with? I have an "old" one (Ulead Video Studio 11) but it doesn't seem to be able to use the codec (no DXV in AVI encoding options)... Any tricks to make the codec "visible" to it??

DXV is a quicktime codec not an AVI codec.
