Resolume 3 and Resolume 4 - File Support

Post by RycoDePsyco »

Soory, i can not English
Speak German
Translatet with Google

English:
Which file extensions or video files supports Resolume up to date?

Will the next version of Resolume 4 also *.flv, *.divx, *.xvid, *.mp4 Supports?

If in Resolume 4 Videos also supported not for each image have contained a keyframe but e.g. each 24 picture?
A video of the only all e.g. 24 images a keyframe has is scanned by Resolume 4 and the non-existing keyframes in Resolume 4 indirectly add or stored / Pinned thus a interference function of is not possible?

German:
Welche Dateiendungen bzw. welche Videodateien unterstützt Resolume aktuell?

Thank You :P

Hey Ryco

In general Resolume 3 will support most codecs in .mov or .avi containers. We generally recommend against using web based delivery/download formats like the ones you're describing, since they are not really suited for VJ'ing.

So we do support interframe compression formats, using keyframes and P-frames, although again we recommend against it. There's a longer explanation here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6152&p=23256&hilit ... %27#p23265

All in all, this situation will probably be the same in R4. (Wow. Resolume 4. We just brought out v3 last year. :D)

I've been using Resolume Avenue 4 recently, in duo with Ableton Live 8. Quite a formidable couple. After thorough research with codecs for work, i discovered these recent facts:

Resolume DOES work nicely with XVID encoded AVI files, IF AND ONLY IF you intend to use these video files to be played forward, NEVER BACKWARDS (because of the inter-frame temporal compression, as you guessed it). I have even mixed 3 layers with XVID @720p, with no significant CPU overhead as compared to working with M-JPEG encoded clips. But it must be emphasized: the bitrate is 50%~70% lower, so the file sizes are considerably lower, which makes this codec suitable for very long files that will be played forward only. And of course, the hard drive won't become a bottleneck with these files.

Resolume DOES WONDERS with its DXV codec, which i love, that takes advantage of my GPU and optimizes performance, but the file sizes will be large. So i choose this codec only for loops, that usually are rather short (less than one minute). And don't forget that with this codec you can also save alpha channel data, so you get perfect transparency.

Resolume WORKS BETTER if you don't interleave audio on the same container that you put your video, say MOV or AVI. I have worked this way with XVID-coded AVI files and separate WAV files, with no problems whatsoever (Resolume doesn't like MP3 either).

Resolume DOES NOT work with H264, neither in MOV or AVI containers. Even if i set the codec to make all frames to keyframes (All I-frames, no P/B-frames), which i have seen as a recent tendency to replace M-JPEG codec for a supposedly better intra-frame spatial compression at lower bitrates (Can someone elaborate on this?)

I work on a SONY VAIO laptop with an i7 quad-core 2.2GHz, 6Gb RAM, 500 Gb 7200rpm Hard drive, nVidia GT540M with 1 Gb DDR3 VRAM, and with a Matrox Triplehead2Go for video mapping, simultaneously with Ableton Live 8 reading the audio from a separate external drive. No glitches.

H264 does work for playback in a MOV container (as long as you don't have to much else going on). I even use them with audio

I receive H264 encoded formats all the time about 10 minutes before event time and either
A: Play them back as is
B: Convert to PhotoJPEG. Converting to DXV from H264 isn't so good for blacks.
