Resolume Beginner Quest :)

Post by Fischje »

Hello everybody out there!

I'm new to VJing and of course included Resolume, too.

Something about my way so far:
I'm a producer and DJ for about 12 Years mainly orientated to house music coming from Germany. Started with vinyls, now only playing MP3s with Trakor and my USB-Controllers. The mean time we're producing using software like A Live8 and sometimes we used Sony Acid, but for Mac incompatiblity that software is out now....

My friend, who's producing with me, is doing lot of Animation things with AfterEffect since 2 years. He's good, but this all is only hobby - it's not the way we get our loans today :)

Our task now is on August-7 we're asked by some friends to make music on their party. It's a small gig (250 persons) mainly with House and some HipHop Music. They asked us if we could make some VJing on this party only for underlining the music and make the people feel dance

We know that we're beginners and that we could not make very hard things, but at moment, we don't know how to start with the whole thing.

We don't know where and which footage we should use for house and this gig? We could make some own footage with our Eos 550, but don't know what. Secondly should we use live-video at the party?

Tested that Resolume could be synced with traktor very well - option 1 is at the same machine (macbook pro core i5) option 2 is a second machine, windows 7. Here it would be nice to get some information about how this audioanalyses things could be realised(how to get the signal into resolume) and how to change the midi-delay(latency) and should be using both softwares on one computer or at 2 computers?!?

We had problems in the past to get our NI Maschine Controller working correctly with Resolume. There is a controller editor coming from ni and before we edit resolume in mapping mode i think we had to change values in this controller editor, but i don't know how the knobs should be configured. Somebody could explain this to me?

Perhaps some of you wants to help us :) I think mostly people need a starting-help to get their own style fluenting.

P.S. I'm not so good with my english - if someone had some language questinons - feel free to post :)

Hey Fischje

Sorry for not replying sooner, we try to answer every post, but sometimes a few slip undetected.

This is perhaps the most difficult question to answer. It's similar to which songs should the DJ play. I suggest looking at different sources of pre-made VJ material (check out http://resolume.com/footage/ for paid and free stuff, but also vjvault.com and vjloops.tv are great sources). Then find some stuff you like and practice with that. That way you can see what works for you and what doesn't, and after that you can proceed to make your own stuff.

I'm not entirely sure about your question here, but if you have questions about how to set up the midi sync, it's best to follow our tutorial for Live and Resolume (), which can be applied for Traktor as well. In general we recommend running the audio and video apps on separate computers for stability reasons. Depending on your hardware setup, you could run the audio out from a DJ mixer or PA via a 'line in' audio input to the Resolume computer. Midi latency can be addressed in several places, usually your audio app will have some way to send the signal a bit sooner or later.

In general, Resolume is looking for midi CC messages. I don't know what the NI Maschine is sending from the knobs by default, but if the other controls are working fine, perhaps this could be the problem.

I hope that answers your questions, feel free to post any others you might have!
