a lot of the mtv mashups look like they were done in resolume, especially that trippy kaleidoscope filter

If you mean the MTVMash stuff, a lot of them are done by EclecticMethod, who use VJamm.

Effects aren't such a good guide to which software was used nowerdays - now that most effects are freeframe, the saem effect can be used by loads of different software packages. (E.g. the new version of VJamm can use all of the freeframe effects too)
