RAID 0 with SSD Drives over usb 3.0 the fastest?

Post by 1000errors »

would i be right in thinking that a raid 0 configuration with SSD drives connected over usb 3.0 is the fastest possible hardrive setup for storing my clips on?

thanks

Hi.
In theory it should be really fast of course but when Mikrobitti (a Finnish computer magazine) was testing SSD drives in RAID configuration they came into conclusion that new SSD drives are too fast for most hardware RAID controllers which are still mostly optimized for normal harddrives. Some RAID configurations were actually slower than one SSD drive configuration.

They managed to encrease performance only with Windows software RAID controller
which is strange because usually software controllers are slower than hardware.

I guess you should dig little bit deeper before spending your money.

out of interest 1000errors what are you trying to accomplish? A really fast raid for vjing or do you have something specific in mind?

I just ordered this new laptop.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh4HWZpDgRU
In the video the guy demos that it can run 3 external monitors at full 1080p as one continous screen with no adtional hardware( matrox triple head). The laptop also features usb 3, esata and 2 internal 7200 rpm hdd.
I plan to use the laptop for 3d animation along with some pretty intensive after effects work and multiscreen vjing.
For vjing purposes I can only output 2 screens at the same time whilst also being able to use the actual laptop screen as well. Ideally (depending on what the graphics card can handle and of course the resolution the projector can project at) I would like to be able to have the option to project at 3840by1080 using 2 projectors.
In resolume I have been using up to 6 layers making full use of alpha channels.
This is a ridiculously short snippet of a vj show real I am making (its been put on hold until my new laptop arrives)
http://vimeo.com/11929639
Basically I'm hoping to be able to do this sort of thing in resolume without dropping to a real low frame rate which is what's happening atm.
Seeing as I have the options of any hard drive setup I want through any connector I thought I might as well find out what the fastest is. I am aware the graphics card might end up being the bottle neck though the 5850 with 1gb of ddr 5 ram is meant to be pretty good. I'll find out in a week once it arrive I guess.
Sorry for the long winded reply ;)

i´m using 2.5" Intel Postville 160GB via SATA 2.0 (3 GBit) for small clips aso.
For big videos i have to 2 x LaCie Rugged 500 GB (7200 U/min) via USB3.0 and it works great!

I wouldn´t use a raidsystem for SSDs because of the missing trim-function!!!
