AMD/ATI or NVidia??

Post by gregsully »

If I'm buying a new laptop for Resolume 3 as its primary purpose. Has anyone tested Resolume's reliability with AMD vs Nvidia's higher end laptop gfx cards?

Discuss!!!

i think there is not much difference between the two manufactors...
older benchmarks like 3dmark 03 should give us a good comparision for resolume performance (or maybe we should use a open gl based benchmark?)
look at notebookcheck.com for benchmark results ;)

the main difference as far as i know (and which is not uninteresting for us) is that the ati/amd chips got better performance with fewer memory in high resolutions...
so if you want an nvidia, may you take the model with more memory ;)

the next main difference could be the drivers, but there are not really problems with that.

it would be interesting to know what parts of the graphic card are used for the processing, or what is really relevant for better performance like:
memory interface (64/128/256bit.....)
chip and memory frequencies
texture units

if there is time i'll try some benchmarks with overclocking an ati and nvidia card...
maybe it gets a bit more clear what is better for performance (is there a way to shut down pixel

I'm sure both manufacture cards are smoking on the high end and looking at benchmark results shows pretty much that.. I think it comes down to drivers and what works best with resolume.. I would love to hear from Resolume developers/staff to find what they generally prefer in the lab..

And I too would like to know what are the most important specs of a graphics card that is most important to resolume.. (ie.. Memory over clock speed?.. etc)

so, just configured my new pc with 2 nvidia and one ati card on win7 64bit running ati catalyst and nvidia control center.... not the newest drivers but it runs now with 3 s-video outputs
so.... about the drivers, you just have to find the right one which works for you :ugeek:
in general i had fewer problems with ati drivers... also a reboot is still needed for tv out on nvidia cards!
i would generally prefer ati
my config works with a main nvidia card and it was not easy to get it to work like it does now, but it runs :)
(gtx 285, 9600 gso and ati 4350, running 197.13 nvidia and 9.7 catalyst if i remember correct ;)
and if i mind right, a 4870 performs better or equal in resolume than a gtx285, in other benchmark scores the gtx285 is normally better, next plus for ati)
