Price of upgrading

Just let it all out, buddy. You're among friends here.

I am a bit disappointed by the steep price for the upgrade from 1.51 to 2.0 .. Firstly the upgrade seems to be more like a version 1.6 than a 2.0, and thus I am a bit put off by the whole thing. I bought Resolume a little more than a year ago, and already I am to pay half the price again for an upgrade :(

In my opinion, as a user of multiple VJ software packages, the upgrading should not be as expensive, and if it really has to be that expensive users should be allowed free upgrades for a certain time instead of "only minor updates".

In Resolumes case, I have had 1, one, minor upgrade in the time of ownership. The software is still a bit shaky at times, numerous bugs exist that the developers know about, but still only 1 minor upgrade..

I would love to continue using Resolume, but if keeping up with upgrades cost this much it is tempting to not bother about it really. Which is a shame, as Resolume is very nice for what it does.

2.0 does indeed feel and look like not much more than a 1.6 release - new features that will be useless to most and bug fixes that should have been out months ago..... if only we could all jump ship to modul8 - v1.0.1 and already as feature complete as resolume - bar the freeframe support.

i dont think we all want to jump ship to modul8, its a mac program, so for me to change to that it would cost over $1000

i don't want to be too defensive but i stiil want to say some things.

We have been on the market with resolume for three years and have never asked anything for the upgrades we made. Some were minor but ithink version 1.5 was a big improvement compared with 1.0. And we did not charge anything. In order to keep our cashflow in a way that we can actually earn something from developing resolume we had to make a update that people have to pay for.
otherwise it will be very hard for us to keep the software up to date.

we are still one of the cheapest vj software evailable, except for the free ones of course.
modul8 costs 295.- € (Euro).
and that's just for starters.

anyway, we showed you the screenshots of version 2.0 and i hope we can surprise you with the new features that are in it. It's not just a color palette update.

cheers
Edwin

hi all,

i dont see the "minor upgrade" thing...
or is it just me?
i think the upgrade with sound responsivness and all the other stuff is GREAT!
and even if the upgrade isnt as big as i think it is, we got freeframe for FREE (besides other things)...
and 99 euro....thats peanuts man, especially when u compare it to other software packages...
and how many developers REALLY listen to the end users?
i feel bart and eddy do...
and than the FREE support....

well u get my point by now i hope...

thanx superficial! it does not really mater what we (the developers) post here to defend ourself ... the word of a fellow vj (you) is much more valuable

I agree with superficial - the cost of resolume is really not very high for what you get.

If resolume 2.0 comes with as many new features in free updates as 1.0 has had, it will be an absolute bargain to upgrade.

I do agree that bart and eddie are not the quickest in fixing bugs that are reported to them, but I can completely understand why that would be - supporting software is time consuming so if the software is not bringing in enough revenue to support additional staff, your hand are tied; especially if you want to work on major new features.

When we bought our first resolume license, we did not expect any new features in a free update. We didn't even really _expect_ bug fixes - we had tried the free demo and were happy that if the licensed version behaved exactly like the demo then we would get our moneys worth.

If resolume did not have a working demo and had been advertised with features that it simply did not have, we would expect them to be added ASAP. However, we all got the chance to try resolume before handing over any money; we got exactly what we paid for. Any additional work done by Bart and Eddie on the version we have already paid for should really be considered a bonus. The fact that they have added new features to it for free should be considered a double-bonus.

Maybe bart and eddie would have been better off not adding any new features for free, to make the leap to 2.0 seem bigger, but that would be a sad world, where developers have to hold back cool features to stop people winging about paying to upgrate from time to time.

Out of interest, Denis, what new features would you want the new resolume to have in order to consider it a full new version?

Dan.

Bart and Ed - keep up the good work!! Resolume is a fantastic, well featured, stable, and CHEAP product - it also has a very active online forum (you're in it!) that the software designers personally contribute to on a regular basis - it's a community, as well as a product that Bart and Ed have created, and i for one want to be part of it.

"...if only we could all jump ship to modul8" shame on you lotek! - where's your loyalty! ; )

I had a go with the 2.0 version and can assure you that it's worth upgrading!!! It's not just a bug fix, they did much and much more. Added a lot of requests, fixed more bugs and added other new stuff to it.
So for 99 euro's it's a bargain if you ask me.
Bart & Edwin, keep up the fantastic work and can't wait till it's august and get me an upgrade!! ;-)

Hi there,
I'm looking forward to the new version. Responsiveness to the music seems like a very good feature to me. I'm also looking forward to a better livefeed....Hope you will release this version on short term. If there's a beta version please let me know...

Peter
