My view about 2.0

Just let it all out, buddy. You're among friends here.

OK, I can't stand 50 replies threads, so here goes my opinion...

I am very happy you called the released version a Beta...

2.0 doesn't run in my ultra-optimized XP installation. It seems paused. In my regular XP installation, it works OK, but I had some crashes. I am sad since the optimized partition runs Resolume 1.51 perfectly... I must have cut too many things...

The good things first:

- So many new things to explore!!! I was going to complain about several things until I realized they CAN be done.

- Then interface is not cluttered, you arrange everything well.

- Audio reactivity has been wonderfully integrated. Congratulations for that!!! Your sistem is easy enough to use, and deep enough to enjoy. Powerful but easy.

- Frame stability. I always saw weird artifacts in the 1.51 output. Those are gone, the output image is solid and good. Resolume can (should) start to think to other markets (presentations).

- New blending modes, thanks for them. I love Difference, but now I have some others to investigate. I didn't use transitions, yet. Great additions.

Now the "I want" list...

- Right-clik unload a layer. Return!!!

- 720x576 resolution and nice DV In. You mention better live camera, but with DV nothing changed... :-((( I won't upgrade until this is done. It would open a new world for VJs working with bands or lots of live camera.

- Effects distribution. I would much rather prefer two effects per clip and two in the output, than 1+3.

- Better performance. I feel this new version less quick, in the same computer, with the same videos, it is really less performing. Let's hope that when you do the definitive one things improve.

- Audio playback. It's really that difficult??? I see two versions:

a) Simple, one layer audio active. For example, layer 2, the clips played in layer 2 play the audio to the output.

b) All layers audio active switchable. Volume selectable for layer. You need to implement a new Tab...

Good luck and implement the changes the people want quickly. This is a quick changing world, I feel Resolume changes sooo slowly. You sent us an email in Christmas stating your were dedicating to Resolume 100%, show it!!!

I now work with the projectors connected to the output of the computer. I feel so confident about Resolume 1.51. I would need to spend a lot of time in front of the 2.0 before I arrive to this level of FAITH.... ;-))

720x576 is there with my gfx card ( a geforceMX440 ) I run all my files 720x576 processed at 720x576, I get 2 layer + some fx (not all) without noticable frame drop. I have to say that the performance seems better to me, so it could be a config thing with your Xp installation, I use win2k mainly.
DV in has in been improved somewhat, you, dont crash if the camera goes offline! But it still is a little sluggish, same with usb capture, seems to drop frames to me even with 320 capture.
The blending modes, well difference certainly was there in 1.5, just right click on T.
If you connect direct to a projector your sure do have a lot of faith, I always use a mixer!

I get the feeling you think that devolping VJ software, is easy and proffitable, If you want to them to spend more time doing this project I suggest you you use the carrot (ie upgrading) rather than the stick! I dont know how many copies they sell but Im sure it doesnt equall the amount of time they put into it! The cost of this software is less than you probably earn per gig, if anything this software is too cheap! I think we all want everything to move faster, so give them your money and encouragement!!
The only software that has 2 seperate outputs That I know of is catalyst, which if you've £20000 to spare will handle 4 dv res layers over 2 outs and firewire in, but will miss out a number of features we've had for a long time, including a killer performance interface. If you want developement show them some respect and the colour of your credit card !! :>)

Hi Cat,

I know software developing is hard, but the word says it all: DEVELOPING. They made a new version, they knew it's not finished, they called it Beta and they asked our opinions. I am giving mine. Do you have any problem with that, cat???

>720x576 is there with my gfx card ( a geforceMX440 )

I have asked about the 720x576 resolution several times from a long time and I never got a definitive answer. I read other people asking for it... I don't have that option in my GeForce FX Go5200, nor I had it with my Matrox G450. I would like to know why. Ed, Bart or whoever can answer, what do I need to have 720x576 working???

Maybe there is some stupid list in a .ini configuration file where I can add a "720x576 32bpp= TRUE" and I have the resolution available to work. Now I don't have it, and I would need it.

>DV in has in been improved somewhat, you, dont crash if the camera goes offline!

I think we all could benefit from a better and more consistent DV IN input. It's not a feature just for me, it's for everybody....

For now I tried working at 640x480, everything must be resized and I get horizontal lines artifacts with moving objects. In other words, it's not working. Since there are millions of MiniDV camcorders worldwide, I think it is a nice step to have a workable DV IN in Resolume. Much better than having to work with webcams, IMHO.

>The blending modes, well difference certainly was there in 1.5, just right click on T.

I know it is, I use it all the time... ;-D I am very happy they include some other blending options!!!

>I get the feeling you think that devolping VJ software, is easy and proffitable,

Read my post, I praise them for what I like and ask for what I think lacks and can benefit me and others. I can't imagine Bart and Ed driving their Ferraris with the money they do with Resolume. But it's not my fault, I would love they make a lot of money, since they made a very good program. Do we want they make the good great and take it to the next level??? I hope they do.

I would love to do visuals for other things than clubs. For certain applications (comercial) you need better resolution. Of course, I hope in these applications they pay better than in clubs, so I can pay more for Resolume. I never complained it is expensive, which is not.

The better Ed and Bart make Resolume, the better for them. Look the case of Pete Warden or the guy who developed PixelShox. They show they are good programmers with good ideas, and they have worked for bigger companies.

Even you tell that software that does things similar to Resolume cost more than a nice car. It's their interest to make their program competitive with it, I think. If they want to live from Resolume, or from any other product, they have to listen to customers. I am a client, I paid the money they asked me (whether too much or too little).

I would love to see more feedback from what we customers ask (if they are realistic things) and what it is done. Let's see how they pass from Beta to definitive. Let's see what they add/improve. The 100€ are burning in my pocket, but I want they resolve the whole 720x576 and DV IN issue.

Good luck to the resolume team and congratulations for the improvements!!!

hi there,
like we said we want feedback, and it doesn't have to be all positive. There are still some mayor bugs in resolume 2.0 but we felt we had to bring it out because we didn't want the users to wait too long. You must understand that there is only one programmer (me) and we made a mistake in how much all the new features would cost. So time is an issue. We hope wecan fix the bugs and make it is as stable as resolume 1.51. The thing is, the more feautures the more bugs. Anyway back to the questions. Using a 720x576 resolution has everything todo with your graphics card. if your card does not support this resolution neither will resolume. Look for alternative drivers for your videocard to enable this resolution.
i downloaded the omega drivers for my radeon mobility card and that enabled the 720x576 resolution.
The live input did improve, you should get better framerates espacially with the usb cameras. We the latest directx techniques for this, so it in the end depends on your capture device how well it will work. We still have to work on the deinterlace. And the capture driver settings are now available.

cheers
