Hi
Using Win 7, AMD Phenom II, and Radeon GPU. Comp runs at 720p currently (freezing still happened at 800x600), with all clips encoded using PicVideo M-JPEG codec.
Now that I bought and know the software well, it seems to be freezing 4-5 times during a typical 4 hour club/bar show. The whole app freezes, the output video freezes, and sometimes it shows the pinwheel spinning (sometimes not). This can last 30-60 seconds before the app comes back to life. Task Manager shows no unusual activity, with the CPU at about 21%.
PLEASE POST YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH KNOWN BAD EFFECT COMBINATIONS. What effects have frozen Resolume in your experience?
Thanks

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
Wow, no responses yet! I find it hard to believe I'm the only one with random freezes during my sets.
It seems to be related to doing several things at once using MIDI controls. Sometimes it seems to happen most when Fisheye amount (on the comp effects) is synced to the comp tempo, plus I'm using the layer opacity faders, plus I press the hue invert button. The whole app freezes, then sits that way for 1-2 minutes, and you can only terminate it after some time has passed. Sometimes it will start working again if you just let it sit. Amazingly annoying when you are in the midst of a good audio/visual synergy.
To add insult to it, I just upgraded to this GPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814500182
and it still freezes (even more regularly?) and seems to now run at a lower framerate than my old GPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814161315
How can a sad old Radeon outperform the newer GPU??
I'm not sure if Resolume freezes in all cases and people have just accepted it, or if my case is unusual. I seem to see mention of the program freezing being a common thing.
I'm not sure if the code is needed refinement or what, but it is so annoying some shows that I am considering taking a break from VJing.
Any experiences to share that might help me figure out why the freezes happen?

the nvidia drivers are a little bit annoying
go to your 3d preferences and deactivate v-sync (and maybe other unused settings too)
with v-sync activated i always get 25fps with my gtx285

Hey the_psychologist
Resolume shouldn't freeze like that, and I'm sure it doesn't for the majority of our users. If you want us to take a look at the issue, you could send us the logfile via the feedback tab of the preferences.

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
OK, i'll try to send a logfile. So what happens if the program freezes and needs to be terminated? Can I restart and still send a logfile that may have data on the freeze?
It just froze 3 times at my latest gig on Saturday with some well-known NYC DJs (Heather Heart, etc.) and it made me really sad. I was using my new GTX 460 during this gig, so I don't think the problem is related to the GPU. It still froze when I was using a Radeon 4670. CPU tops out at 25% at most.
It seems to freeze when I do several things at once, like setting a clip to BPM sync, driving effects using the comp tempo, pressing an invert button, and doing speed ramping on clips. It just seizes up for xxx seconds. Windows 7 still works OK, only Resolume freezes.
I have seen other users mention things like "it only freezes a few times a show" so that's why I was curious if Resolume is known to freeze.
I've actually announced that I am going to stop VJing soon, as the technology is not transparent yet. I go through a lot of work to set up these shows, only to have the performance hurt by stupid freezes. Too frustrating.

This is a shame to hear but how is it not transparent? is it just that Resolume isnt working correctly for you? sometimes in Vjing i find more is less.the_psychologist wrote:I've actually announced that I am going to stop VJing soon, as the technology is not transparent yet. I run through a v4 using res ave and no issues with freezing. doesnt matter what resolution and doesnt matter what effects it just works. There must be some incompatibily somewhere. but where i dont know.
Good luck in getting this sorted and if you've seen the resolume 4 thread then this may solve your problems.
dont give up yet

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
it does sound like you are having some kind of tech issue there - dont let it colour your experience of vjing. i use avenue running multiple layers of 720p or higher footage and happily run it on the same machine all night without freezeing.
find the issue, get your machine tuned and get back to the fun part of enjoying vjing

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
maybe it's a hardware/driver problem!?
try deactivating all hardware u don't need...
i have problems with my netgear usb wlan stick.... getting a bluescreen, freezes or crashes about every half an hour.
without the wlan stick, all runs fine

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to be patient.
What I have noticed is that Resolume doesn't freeze if I just let it run. I can also do basic fading between 720p layers, add basic effects, etc.. But as soon as I start pushing the program by using my footpedal, webcam, comp tempo, BPM-synced loops, audio spectrum analysis, etc. it's just a matter of time until it freezes
I didn't buy this program and build a custom VJ computer just to do typical, basic performances. I did it because Resolume seemed to be the most logically-designed program, kind of similar to Ableton Live. My goal is to get the tightest sync possible with the DJs, which requires using the full range of features. If I can't do this, then I need to quit or find a more stable program.

Re: FREEZING and EFFECTS!!
as a thought - have you tried using DXV instead of PicVideo encoded clips?
using DXV will free up your cpu a bit ( PicVid is cpu decoded - DXV is GPU decoded )
