Evaluating Resolume 3 vs Modul8, HELP!

Post by milgauss »

So, I'm trying to decide between Resolume 3 and Module8. I MUCH prefer Resolume's approach; HOWEVER, I am having some serious technical issues.

My laptop:
Macbook Pro (mid-2009)
2.53 Ghz core 2 duo
Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (fresh install, no other apps installed except Resolume and Modul8)
8gb RAM
7400 rpm internal drive (for software and clips)
Geforce 9400M (256mb shared RAM)

The test:
(all settings default, Resolume 3.3.2 demo, Modul8 2.6.3 demo)
640x480
Running 5 layers: three of the provided Resolume demo clips (UrbanTextures) and two additional DXV encoded clips (approx. 4 seconds long each).

Within 30 seconds of starting play, Resolume will beach ball. Any audio will continue to play, the beat counter will continue to run, but the output is frozen. This stays stuck for approximately 30 to 60 seconds. It usually happens again in another minute or so.

In Modul8, running the exact same clips (and default settings in the demo), it runs flawlessly. I can even add 5 more layers, load each with effects, and get no hiccups whatsoever.

I really want to choose Resolume, but cannot figure out why it is performing so differently.

(attached log files and glview report) ...odd that the Resolume log shows only 2gb of RAM detected???

Which codec are you using?

Resolume and Modu8 are to very different programs indeed.

The issue may be the graphics card but i cannot confirm this.

does anyone else have an issue with this type of card?
Geforce 9400M (256mb shared RAM)

As its shared ram this may be an issue.

The Resolume Demo clips are not DXV also.

Hey MilGauss

Basic is correct in the assumption that the GeForce 9400 you have in there doesn't pack enough punch to run Resolume. In general, if your laptop's GPU is using shared memory, Resolume will not run. or not fluent. So I'm afraid that short of buying a new laptop, Resolume is not an option for you. Sorry.

Really appreciate the help, guys!

Odd that Modul8 can take the same hardware/clips and perform so much better. Maybe it's because they've been on the Mac longer?

I guess I've got to go the Modul8 route.... really would rather get Resolume, but another $2000 macbook pro isn't in the budget right now.

Thanks again

as said before they are very different programs but yes investing another $2000 is a lot of money but i highly recommend when you upgrade giving Resolume a thorough try. Im sure you wont be disappointed either! good luck :)
