hello,
I'm little confused.
I want to buy a new card specially for resolume but there are 3 choices.
Matrox g550 cheap 140 euro and in 1.1 will use dvdmax.
MSI geforce4MX 64mb tv in/out nview
directx7
or Hercules 8500LE with dualmonitorsupport and tvout and 128 mb directx8
msi and hercules are the same price 210 euro
How important is directx??
Is a g550 fast enough?
Has somebody already tried one of the last 2?
thanks
which card shall i buy
I gone use only resolume and flash on that computer, I want a good not too expensive graphicscard.
what can I do whit that zoom option.
And I now use a geforce 2 on my other comp.
but somtimes it slows down , do you use a matrox?
that g450eTV is is not as cheap as the g550 is it.
I thought that the radeon was a better choice over the geforce4mx because it's faster and has better dualheaddisplay with hydravision.
comments?
I'll buy something this friday.

yes i think the Radeon 8500 has better dualhead possibilities ... but note that i have not tested this myself! i base this opinion on various reviews i have seen checkout www.tweakers.net for all your hardware news ...

the matrox g450eTV is more expensive than the g550 because is has video capture and playback as well as video out (g550 just has video out)
the zoom option on the matrox cards let you draw a rectangular (4:3 ratio) area on your screen (kind of like a rectangular selection in photoshop), this area is then scaled up to fullscreen and outputs through the video-out cable (your monitor still displays as normal)
This means you can output any region of your desktop to the video out. eg. you could run visualisations in winamp, and zoom to output just the visuals window.
very handy...

hi alfFX
i've been looking around last days with the same problem as you: which card to buy.
though i have not tested any of next cards it seems that the hercules8500 looks like a good choice indeed. dont go for the gf4MX but have a look on the leadtek gf4 4400/250 instead. bit more expensive... i'm still doubting but what comes back in newsgroups is that ati's support isn't that good. BTW ati8500 tv-out is 800x600, hercules8500 1024x768!!! sorry i didnt mention the matrox, they seem a little bit outdated....
good luck and hope your choice will be the correct one. try&error

Hi Jerome
in defense of matrox cards, i have to say i know their 3d performance is nowhere near that of a geforce, but their 2d/video capabilities are excellent, and they still offer features that no other card have (eg dualhead zoom, and DVDmax). Matrox has been in the biz of making video and computer-video hardware longer than many other graphics card manufacturers out there, and this is reflected in the quality of their video output.
I've been VJ'ing about 8 years and have always used matrox - i did buy a geforce with tv-out last year but sold it after 3 months for another matrox...
all the matrox cards ive had (millenium, g400max, g450eTV, g550) have been a case of install and they run with no probs and do exactly what i want them to do - no driver issues or compatability problems. (hmm sounds like i should get a job selling them...)
anyway the regardless of that, i know everyone has to find their own system that works for them, and the unique way they work, so good luck to all...
