This should work when you set the layer with the masks on Mask50, full opacity, or Multiply, 50% opacity.

I'm not sure what you want to do exactly, but it's not possible to use a blend mode to mask out parts of a layer, while keeping another layer beneath it intact. Clip/layer masks or keystone effects are the only way to achieve this.
