How to record an external audio input (windows only)

I would like to record external audio (windows only, without Ableton live) (not control video with the audio rythm).
How can i do and which software i must install?

do you have a capture device of any sort? what will you be recording too? what will you be recording?

Just had this issue come up. Your best option is to record externally I tried some internal setups but it was too taxing. I ended up using an aja ki pro, the DVD recorder didn't have any monitoring capablilitys and I wanted the one take experience. I have recorded while doing a ustream with success however my computer was definitely taxed. Hope this helps.
