Slices and layers (beginner)

Post by mwarr_ »

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to Resolume and still learning the basics, but I’m really enjoying the process and experimenting as much as I can.

There’s something I’m a bit stuck on and I hope someone can help clarify it.

At the moment, I have a setup with three different screens configured in Advanced Output, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to control where each layer goes.

Let’s say I have a layer (or group of clips) that I want to show only on two of the screens, and completely exclude from the third one. Within one of the two screens, I might even want to send that content just to a specific slice.

I’ve heard about two different approaches:

- Go into Advanced Output, pick the slice(s), and assign the input to the specific layer I want to display.

- Create separate groups in the composition and use the Slice Transform effect on the group, without touching the Advanced Output input assignments.

Which of these two approaches is the correct or most efficient one? Are there any reasons to choose one over the other in terms of performance, flexibility, or project organization?

Also, one more thing:

How do you usually organize your layers in a multi-screen setup? Do you create one layer per screen area, or is there a smarter way to handle this without making the composition messy?

Thanks a lot in advance to anyone willing to help out. I know these might be beginner questions, but I’m just getting into this amazing software and trying to understand the best practices. :D :D

Hi hi welcome to the group. When you work with slices you indeed have both ways of doing it and you can combine them or pick one of the two, depending on your set up and how you like to work. In your case when you have three slices/screens it's very easy to make three groups, but some people work with 100 slices then slice transform will be handy maybe because you can make different set ups and save them as presets.

I only use your first method if I have a screen that should always show for instance a logo, but I don't need to touch during the show. I'll just put it on one layer or a group, put it somewhere closed and you don't need to look at it anymore specially if you set your clips to always only be played on that particular layer (play on its own layer.) And then I also said that layer to ignore column (right mouse click on a layer) triggers so you can't by accident trigger another movie. in all other cases I like to use slice transform because it gives you way more control and you can do some very nice things with them.

In your case, if I would have three screens, my normal set up would have mostly like 12 to 14 layers then I would have a slice effect on every layer set up differently so I can make nice combinations, looks and changes by switching layers

I hope this helps further along with Resolume. If you want to have some more information, you should definitely check out our YouTube channel which has loads of tutorials
