Sequencing clips for recording

I think it would be handy to have some form of clip sequencing so that when recording a showreel (for example) you could get clips triggering precisely.

I expect this is fairly easy, and I imagine the best way would be to use a basic MIDI sequencer to send signals to Resolume, but I have no idea where to begin. Does MIDI need to come from an external source, or can it come from a program running on the same PC? Has anyone tried this kind of thing and if so what do you suggest?
