This is very relative.
How big is your target, how far are you projecting, how luminous is the environment close to your projection, etc, etc.
You can project something indoor with a 3K, 5K ansi lumens projector. Outdoor, with a 10K, 15K, 20K, 25K ansi lumens projector. The number of projectors and type of lens will vary depending the size of your target and the distance from it.
Now... if you are asking about technology. I´d rather pick a DLP projector.

In general, the higher the contrast ratio, the better the image quality. I'd recommend against any projector that has a contrast ratio below 1000:1 for video mapping.

Also when you pick a projector, don't forget to take size and weight into consideration especially if you are going to do installations with intense projection angle.

For instance:

With its 45,000 lumens and 4K resolution, the Christie Roadie 4K45 4K DLP projector (release date March 2015) is probably going to be as good as it gets but at 287 pounds NL, you'll need a small army to move it around and the price tag will give you nightmares!

Because of their weight and punch, my 3 favorite all-around projectors right now are :
  • Christie Roadster HD14K-M 1080 HD DLP (1920 x 1080): 13,500 lumens with 3-chip DLP, 55 pounds NL ~$35,000
    Panasonic PT-DZ870 WUXGA (1920x1200): 12,000 lumens with 1-chip DLP, 39 pounds NL ~ $14,000
    Panasonic PT-DX100 XGA (1024x768): 10,000 lumens with 1-chip DLP, 39 pounds NL ~ $8,000,
Keep in mind that all the prices above are without lens and lenses can be quite expensive! Both Panasonic projectors will work with the new Panasonic ET-DLE030 ultra-short-throw lens.

the best projector for me would be a high contrast, high resolution, high ansi lumen, low noise, lightweight, small and ... cheap one...
but you can't have everything in one package.

lens should be chosen according to the task.

What type of budget are we talking about here? Projector prices range from 300-100k.

I recently picked up a Sanyo XT25 for 360USD (ebay avg is 500) and I think its a great 4500 lumen projector. Good quality image, multiple lens options and it appears to have a pretty rugged chassis. Lamps are cheap as well.

depends on venue, sometimes you want two boardroom projectors over one mid/large venue projo. BenQ makes decent cheap ones you and can use light weight rigging. larger heavier projectors suck if you don't have a proper rig to support it. You are often better off looking for a used one, production companies/churches move forward with projection technology constantly and as a result you can score a good price on a Christie or whatever at a fraction of the original cost. example, I just grabbed a Christie DS+650 DLP SXGA+ 6500lumens with a .8 short lens and a standard zoom and road case for $1100, these were $18,000 in 2008 with no lens, its no cutting edge projector now in 2015 but it still looks great and is well made, and a cheap option. hope this helps.

It totally depends on you, what kind of projector you want to own. But you must consider it's lumen, lamp life, brightness before buying it. For more information
