How to get external audio input/SMPTE from an iTunes?

Post by rfikes4 »

I would like to make audio reactive effects from music playing through an iTunes playlist. I do not want the input to be coming through my laptop's microphone. Instead I want the audio to be picked up straight from iTunes or some other program. How can I achieve this? Also would it be possible to pick up the SMPTE signal from the audio being picked up as well?

Soundflower and Loopback (from the same developer) both route audio from one application to another. As far as I am aware, iTunes doesn't send SMPTE Timecode. Would be better to use something else, maybe garage band or a DAW.

Use 4 channels of Loopback channel mapping table with Soundflower (64-ch) as follows:
Channels 1 & 2, assign main output L & R
Channels 3 & 4 assign your SMPTE source 1 & 2 )

Arena can take two independent SMPTE timecodes

In Arena, choose channels 1 & 2 for audio input, channel 3 for SMPTE 1 and channel 4 for SMPTE 2

Then you would use channels 1 & 2 to animate a parameter. To do so, right click on the arrow next to the parameter name and select External Audio FFT.

Note that you could also setup channels 5 & 6 for preview but you get the idea!
iTunes doesn't send SMPTE Timecode
It doesn't generate it but it can play an SMPTE file since it's just audio. Here is a link where you can generate SMPTE timecode as Wave files.

Horae and Qlab (pro audio or video) are both great timecode generator for the mac. As a note, Qlab can handle multiple streams of independent LTC and MTC timecode.

Oakton , I followed your pictorial guide to get iTunes playing through resolume-success when I switch by system preferences sound output to "loopback audio" But when I do this, music doesn't play through my interface/monitors anymore. Luckily I have audio hijack so I told the program to take input of "loopback audio" and run it through "mobile pre output"-sound started playing out of my monitors again.
The only problem is I can't control the volume level off my keyboard aka the master volume fader on my computer. I have to change the volume in iTunes itself.

This whole method is tedious, doest give me full control I need, nor is the volume off my monitors loud enough this way. What Can I do differently?

Thank you so much for your time in advance!
